What are we even working on?

So, if you have found our website and looked into the Projects section, you have most certainly not asked yourself what those projects even are, what their state is, and why we’re working on three different games at the same time. Well, truth is that we are only really working on one, at the moment.

NekTek essentially started with the idea of the project called “Magitech” at the time of writing. Being LGBTQ+ ourselves, we wanted to realize a story that revolves around oppression, prejudices, breaking free and finally improving society as a whole.

Initially starting as a platformer, it slowly evolved into the state it currently is: a turn-based JRPG in very similar veins to Earthbound. However, we soon realized that we were way over our heads with this project, especially since we didn’t even make one singular game before that. While I do have experience in game development, we as a team certainly do not have enough of it. So, for now, it’s on ice. We will return to it someday, though.

Next up we have a 3D Tower Defense game with no given name. Starting as an idea we thought would be a really cool concept, combining classic tower defense and strategy gameplay, it also got developed to a state that we could call “playable”. Once again, though, we saw that the scope of it would be too big for us now. So, on the shelf it goes.

Finally, we arrive at the game we are actually working on, Digitality. Being a Breakout game, inspired by Arkanoid and (hopefully) having lots of unique idea, we have a very realistic chance of finishing it, and polishing it to a state we can call “good”. It is around 40% completed, but as we all know, the last 10% are the worst, so we cannot for certain tell you a release date yet.

And right now? Good question. We’re currently kinda stuck with making cool bosses for Digitality (after all, who’d want to just play pong for boss fights?), and while ideas are plenty, what works and what doesn’t is something we can only find out through play testing. In the meantime, we thought about doing a small in-team game jam, creating a game that is very arcadey, can be played in a browser (we heard Adore Falsh is really cool for this!), and also has shared high scores… but let’s put a big maybe on the last part.

If we succeed in creating a game, no matter how small, we can finally really call ourselves a game development team. And hopefully, we can call you our satisfied fan base. But only time will tell.
